Some gas-saving ideas

Switching gears for a moment, I'd like to go back to talking about auto fuel consumption. I've followed a couple links lately that mentioned some tips for saving gas that many of us probably don't think about. Here are links to the articles, and I've bulleted out what I consider the most interesting points.

9 Ways to Save on Gas This Summer
  • Reduce rapid acceleration and hard braking
  • Pack light and remove roof racks/cargo when not in use

  • Top 10 Tips for Saving Gas
  • Go ahead and use your A/C when you're on the highway on those hot days; opening windows just adds drag (but turn off the A/C when stopped or in slow traffic)
  • Don't keep your gas tank full; less gas = less weight

    • My auto industry ad friends tell me that SUV sales are hitting the wall and dealers are getting stuck with them. I'm considering a diesel wagon in the fall (45 mpg) to help compensate.

Another way to save on gas is to turn the car off when waiting at any drive through (probably covered in one of those links).

    • joey2: Yep, I've read to always turn the car off if you're going to be sitting for about 30 seconds or longer. Which goes against the old CW which stated that starting up the car uses a ton of gas. (Not so on current vehicles.)

Seems like I was looking at a diesel something or other recently. My car is approaching 5 yrs old, which in my mind means I should be thinking about car shopping, but there is *absolutely nothing wrong with it*. (God bless Toyota!)
